In this Collaborative Vocabulary Activity, students work together using context clues and examples to write their own definitions.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-069e094 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"069e094\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What is Mythology?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6c67f92 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6c67f92\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Every semester, I start my Mythology class out with this question &#8211; What is Mythology?\u00a0<\/p><p>This may seem like a concept that could easily be solved by looking up &#8220;mythology&#8221; in the dictionary.\u00a0 The definition from dictionary.com states that mythology is &#8220;a body of myths, as that of a particular people or that relating to a particular person:<span class=\"luna-example italic\" data-term=\"Greek\" data-linkid=\"nn1ov4\">Greek mythology&#8221; or the fourth definition states, &#8220;a set of stories, traditions, or beliefs associated with a particular group or the history of an event, arising naturally or deliberately fostered.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p>Neither one of these definitions actually encompass all that Mythology is. based in content and essential for learning and understanding.\u00a0 You need to be careful that you aren&#8217;t choosing words that don&#8217;t have multiple meanings or interpretations.\u00a0 They should be based around key concepts.\u00a0 These types of words often show up in your Essential Questions.\u00a0<\/p><p>For example, in my Mythology class, another Tier 3 word might include Hero.\u00a0 How students define a hero, may be very different from each other.\u00a0 And while there is a dictionary definition, it is a word with nuance and depth beyond the dictionary.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7b021bc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"7b021bc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Step 2: Gather Context Clues from Examples<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dc9e9c6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dc9e9c6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The next step is to have students brainstorm and take notes on the characteristics of the word.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>For mythology, it really is &#8220;the study of myths.&#8221; So, what students really need to understand is what makes a piece of text a myth?\u00a0<\/p><p>I gather examples of myths, we read them together or in pairs or teams &#8211; I have varied the structure and do it different ways each year.\u00a0 Lately, I have been using partners and teams, rather than reading the myths to the class. This fosters class discussion and gives me the change to teach my routines for getting into partners and teams on the first day of class.\u00a0 I like to jump right in.\u00a0<\/p><p>Student take notes on the characteristics they think make something a myth based on these examples. I have had students get together so that they have 4-6 new partners with 4-6 new definitions.\u00a0 I have also done it where students who were partners join other sets of partners to form new groups of 4-6.\u00a0 Either way works!\u00a0<\/p><p>There is also a more advanced way of doing this called an Expert Jigsaw &#8211; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/450;\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-401f83f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"401f83f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>*Pro tip: Sometimes students will just create one big list because they wan&#8217;t to include everyone&#8217;s definition and not disagree.\u00a0 So I set a limit to the number of words, sentences, or list items.\u00a0 It&#8217;s arbitrary, but it forces them to make choices.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-535113c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"535113c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Step 5: Coming to a Consensus<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-afb9dd7 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"afb9dd7\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>By this point students have worked with a variety of people, heard many definitions, and consolidated ideas.\u00a0 The last step is to come to a consensus as a class.\u00a0<\/p><p>For this section of the activity, I have each group write their definition on the board.\u00a0 (I love seeing my board covered with definitions!)<\/p><p>The teacher becomes the facilitator.\u00a0 I start by asking students to read each definition.\u00a0 Then we start combining elements or pieces of the definitions.\u00a0 As we combine I write the main idea in the center and erase everything that relates to it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><em>*Pro Tip: You can guide students to using the academic vocabulary you would like in this phase.\u00a0 For example, &#8220;X, Y, and Z all relate.\u00a0 Can we call this _____(insert the word your want).&#8221;\u00a0 In Mythology, I often hear students say that myths are a religion, but I might say, &#8220;Can we call this a belief system?&#8221; people still believe in them.\u00a0 It is not our place to judge whether or not they are true or false, but to learn from them.<\/p><p>If students weren&#8217;t involved in examining common texts, brainstorming characteristics, and have deep conversations debating the definition; then I would &#8220;tell&#8221; them the definition of Mythology, but it wouldn&#8217;t change their perception of mythology.<\/p><p>Ultimately this activity helped my students respect other students by participating in collaboration and discussion. It also helped established that my class is a class where student voices and opinions are important.\u00a0 And because of those two things, we respected the beliefs of the myths we read, without disparaging them with questions like, &#8220;This is ridiculous!
